Historic turning point for Germany
“Germany is on the side of the Ukrainians, therefore on the right side of history”. And now it focuses on safety. In a historical speech in the BundestagChancellor Olaf Scholz announced measures that were unthinkable for the Germans until a few days ago: first of all a special fund of 100 billion to strengthen the Bundeswehr. “And from now, year after year, we will invest over 2% of GDP in defense”, assured the Bundeskanzler.

Berlin has what NATO has always claimed, after years of resistance and fears also dictated by its own heavy historical legacydetermining the first real break with Merkelism. “Putin’s war marked an epochal turning point on the continent, the world will not be after what it was before”, said Scholz. With his “cold-blooded” war, Putin has “created a parallel reality and we must give clear answers”.
But Germany it will leave diplomatic channels open, and promises “all diplomacy possible, without being naïve”. At the Bundestag, Scholz also formalized the handing over of arms to the Ukrainians, “a change of 180 degrees”, acknowledges Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, “but if the world changes, our politics must change too”. “We tried diplomacy until the last minute. Putin wanted war ‘whatever it takes'”.
The effects of the sanctions are already visible on the stock exchanges, and if “it is true that war is a catastrophe for Ukraine, it will also prove to be a catastrophe for Russia”, added the chancellor. In parliament, the issue of Moscow’s exclusion from the Swift international payment system was also addressed: “it is an issue that makes many nervous, I know. But believe us, the measures will be taken in such a way as to affect only Russia”, he said. Baerbock took over.
“We will isolate Moscow”, the addition of the finance minister Christian Lindner, “we hit the banks, the oligarchs and the economy of Russia”. “The sanctions will have an effect on us too, but we are ready to face the contraindications, because they are the price of freedom‘”, for the liberal leader.
