Gerhard Berger he drove for Ferrari, in Formula 1, from 1987 to 1989 and then from 1993 to 1995, winning five Grand Prix. The Austrian driver, much loved by the fans, he also had several road Ferraris at his disposal with which to have fun outside the race weekends, and among them we cannot fail to include the F40 and Redhead. The latter, with a personalized plate, will go on sale in Monte Carlo on 13 May 2022.
This was announced by Bonhams, who will handle the auction relating to the vehicle within the event ‘The Monaco Sale – Les Grandes Marques in Monaco‘. The car, built in 1989 and red in color, it was valued between 140 and 150 thousand euros. It was delivered new to Gerhard Berger, which is why the value is certainly higher than most of the Testarossa. Berger collected it in Güssing, Austria, with registration on May 19, 1989 with VIP license plate T.4798; the car was part of the contractual agreement entered into with Ferrari. With the same Austrian license plate Berger also used a 328 GTS, previously owned by him.
The driver only kept it for one year, as in 1990 he raced with the McLaren-Honda team alongside Ayrton Senna; in his place he had time to buy his personal F40. The last owners of the Testarossa managed to have an interview with Berger in the UK a few years ago, after having acquired the car and carried out various checks and restorations. The Austrian signed the dashboard and the engine compartment.
There is also a tragic story linked to this car. Berger sold the car in 1989 to Inntaler Transport GsmbH, which in turn sold it to the Wimpissinger family. A fire in the house of the latter destroyed some documents of the car, but obviously more important and painful, it killed the daughter of the owner of the property. Later the car had other owners in Austria and Germany. As told by Berger himself, Senna got into the passenger seat of the carthanks to a ride offered by the Austrian towards the Monza racetrack, in September 1989.
