One of the biggest surprises of the Xbox Showcase was the reveal of Gears of War: E-Day. This will be the new installment of this beloved series, but instead of continuing the story of Kait Díaz it will take us to the beginning of the locust war. It will also return us to the classic mission design of these games.
In an interview the director of Gears of War: E-DayMatt Searcy talked a little about what players can expect. Here he revealed that the game will follow a linear mission model just like the original trilogy. They don’t want to mess with the semi-open maps that were introduced in the fifth installment.
For Searcy, the saga has been characterized by this more linear design that still gave us memorable moments and unmatched confrontations. Furthermore, this new installment will take place entirely within a city, which lends itself more to this style of levels.
Of course, returning to linear does not mean that Gears of War: E-Day will not seek to innovate. ‘It will feel new but also authentically Gears-like at the same time. We have the opportunity to do all the things that we know and were amazing, but also bring new techniques, new experiences and a new graphics engine.’ Searcy assured. Do these statements move you?
What do you mean by Gears of War being linear again?
Since the first gears of war and until the fourth the saga was quite linear with its missions. That is, the players had to go from point A to point B without major distractions. Although sometimes they gave us the choice of which path to take, they usually led to the same side. Of course, it didn’t avoid the shootouts and amazing action sequences along the way.
The fifth installment that arrived in 2019 wanted to change things up a bit by giving us some semi-open sections. Here we were presented with large maps with different objectives that we could complete as best suited us. Although it was an attempt to innovate the franchise, some fans did not receive this feature very well. What do you think is the best mission design for the franchise?
