DThe UN Secretary-General’s “shock” at the complete blockade of the Gaza Strip announced by Israel would have served the United Nations well before and often when it came to terrorism against Israel. But the majority of the General Assembly, i.e. the world of states, has not always had sympathy for the state that others want to wipe off the map.
The unprecedented massacres of civilians should be a reason for the UN to outlaw the crimes as well as their perpetrators and supporters and to strengthen Israel’s right to self-defense.
The democratic state is being challenged
The aim of terror is to provoke the attacked state into reactions that will destroy it internally and pillory it externally. It is part of the tragedy in the Middle East that effective counterattacks are hardly possible without endangering innocent people, especially against those who not only murder children but also use civilians as protective shields.
Unlike Hamas and its supporters, the Israeli army fights as an arm of a democratic constitutional state. She cannot fight this fight by all means. Not only because the country is tied to its values, but also out of self-interest. An indiscriminate war against everyone in Gaza will not bring victory. The community of values that stands behind Israel must support the country in its legitimate defense in order to prevent anything worse from happening.
