Mexico.- The announcement that non-salaried workers will be able access Social Security services through the Pilot Program for Independent Workers It was considered insufficient by economics expert Jaffet León, pointing out that this important group for the Mexican economy it lacks a large number of labor rights.
He even considered that since it is not a program that has its own item in the federation’s expenditure budget, what it does is abuse the operational capacity of IMSS and public health systems. “It is a benefit that falls short to serve this population and all its benefits should be improved,” she said.
Economic group
According to the IMSS, the entrepreneurs, non-salaried workers, also known as freelancers or employees of family industries, merchants, artisans, street vendors, mechanics, florists and self-employed professionals, among others, will be able to access through monthly fees to this new scheme for incorporation into Social Security that grants medical services, maternity, nurseries, retirement fund, social benefits, disability pension and life.
In this regard, the economist Jaffet León added that the Mexican economy is in a development situation and cannot yet be considered solid enough to be able to establish that these workers are in a formal situation. In fact, he pointed out that more than half of them lack labor rights and it is something that afflicts the country and its economy. Even, according to the Inegi, independent workers represented 21.3 percent of the country’s employed population in 2020.
