Even before the start of the Formula 1 world championship 2022, one of the non-sporting news that caused the Italian public to discuss the most focused on the position taken by the top management of the Circus on pre-GP air shows. From this season, in fact, the spectators present in the stands of the Imola and Monza racetrack may not attend the show of the National Aerobatic Team, better known by the nickname of Frecce Tricolori. The motivation would lie in the desire to reduce CO2 emissions to zero, with overflight that therefore would not meet this objective.
If the decision were confirmed, as it seems certain it is, it would suddenly cancel the possibility of seeing the Italian flag above the starting grid, spread by the ten aircraft of the Frecce Tricolori – in perfect timing after the performance of the national anthem – from 2015 to today in that of Monza. Even before this time slot, however, the aerobatic team – considered by experts in the sector the most spectacular internationally – was able to make its first appearance, in the Temple of Speed, on a sunny Sunday in Brianza in 1982, characterized by an atmosphere of celebration and all celebrations Made in Italy now dating back forty years ago.
A few months after the success of the national football team in the World Cup in Spain, and the historic exultation of Sandro Pertini in the stands of the Santiago Bernabeu, the President of the Republic himself was acclaimed by the crowd also in that Monza, where he rushed to attend a more than unique GP for the Ferrari fans: called to replace the injured Didier Pironi, Mario Andretti in fact, he signed the pole position on his absolute debut with the Red, in a race that later saw the victory of the French René Arnoux. Curiously, the then Renault driver had previously been announced by the Maranello house as its new driver for the 1983 World Championship. However, even before the start, the attention of the public was all for the Frecce Tricolori, also at their debut. in the panorama of Formula 1 after the previous show on Imola in 1980. Moreover, also in that year, the Patrol performed its own evolutions for the first time with aircraft Aermacchi MB-339, which replaced the old Fiat G-91s. Contrary to the ‘simple’ flyovers enjoyed in recent seasons, in 1982 the PAN gave away one real exhibition to the spectators, performing some maneuvers typical of the classics air-show in which he regularly participates around the world. On that occasion, in fact, the aviators completed several figures too at low altitude, exalting the crowd with loops, rollers and high-speed completed turns. Images that, seen today, not only give shivers for the danger of the show, but also represent a fragment of an Italy – and an F1 – extremely different from the current one.
