The German football legend Franz Beckenbauer, world champion as a player in 1974 and as a coach in 1990, died on Sunday at the age of 78, the club announced this Monday. German Federation (DFB).

“Franz Beckenbauer was definitely the greatest German footballer of all time, and above all he was a formidable man,” DFB vice president Hans-Joachim Watzke said in a statement.
Beckenbauer had been retired for years in Salzburg (Austria), near his native Bavaria. His precarious health had greatly limited his public appearances.
