Germany says goodbye to one of its greatest football legends. Franz Beckenbauer, who was a prominent captain of that country's team that won the 1974 World Cup, has died at the age of 78.
At the moment, the reason for his death has not been revealed, which was confirmed both by the family of the prominent athlete and by the German Football Federation.
The man who shone on the playing field as a defender was proclaimed winner with his country's team in the 1974 World Cup. 16 years later, as a coach, he lifted that trophy again, in the 1990 Cup final.
As Germany coach, he also won the Ballon d'Or twice, in 1972 and 1976.
Franz Beckenbauer was nicknamed “Kaiser”, emperor in German, and won the Club Champions Cup for three consecutive years: in 1974, 1975 and 1976, with Bayern Munich.
