During a session in the National Assembly discussing the war in Ukraine, Colonna told the deputies that “Moscow has chosen to flee forward on the political level”, as well as “on the military level, by declaring a partial mobilization of its population and on the level of rhetoric” as well, with threats of the possible use of nuclear weapons that are not Russian officials keep waving it.
In a clear reference to this threat of possible use of nuclear weapons by Russia, the French minister said: “We will not surrender and we will not fall into the trap. We will continue, for our part, to show the responsibility of a power that possesses” nuclear weapons.
In Colonna’s eyes, the Russian president has put himself in a “triple stalemate”, diplomatic, military and domestic.
She explained that “on the ground first: this is confirmed by its recent retreats. There is also a stalemate before the international community: Russia finds itself more and more alone. There is a stalemate before its people, with the decision to mobilize.”
This session was held in the National Assembly to discuss the war in Ukraine, after Russia annexed 4 Ukrainian regions to it, in a decision rejected by Kyiv and its Western allies.
The French minister stressed that the date for the end of the war in Ukraine is determined by Kyiv and no one else.
“It is not up to us to determine when this war will end. It is up to Ukraine. It is up to Ukraine to decide when, under what conditions and according to what rules, it can discuss a dialogue aimed at starting negotiations” with Russia, she said.
