For its part, the widely affected operator Free reported on Twitter that “multiple malicious acts” had taken place on the fiber infrastructure overnight, but that they are already “limited”.

The portal ADSL Zone detected 9,156 fixed internet failures in France in the last 24 hours, which mainly affected the customers of the operator Free and, to a lesser extent, SFR. “This type of incident, of such a scope, never happens,” a source close to the case told AFP.
“It’s the first time, at the moment we don’t know who it was,” he added, indicating that surveillance devices had been put in place to prevent the same problem from reproducing elsewhere. According to Free, the attacks took place around 4:00 am local time.
“Since this morning, the teams have been mobilized,” he told the AFP the operator, who expected the network to be “restored throughout the day”.
Three of Free’s four arteries, which form the backbone of its network, were vandalized.
According to SFR’s initial findings, several of its interregional “long-distance” fiber optic cables, which run alongside highways, rail lines and waterways, were voluntarily severed in various places, notably on the Paris-Lyon axis and Paris -Strasbourg (east).
According to the company, its teams are working to resolve the issue. For its part, the company Bouygues Telecom told AFP that this group “does not use the affected cables” and that “mobile and fixed services work normally.”
The “backbone”, the backbone of an internet network, serves to interconnect internet traffic between different areas geographical areas thanks to high-speed fibers. “It is a kind of ‘hub’ for fiber,” explained an industrialist in the sector.
“When you cut that off, you cut off access to an entire region.” However, an outage can be remedied by interconnecting networks, which allows operators to offer a service (albeit of lower quality).
