Franca Fendi, the third of the five sisters of the historic Roman maison, died in the night of an illness in her home in Rome. She was 87 years old. With her sisters Paola, Anna, Carla (who passed away in 2017) and Alda, Franca has been managing the maison since the postwar period, founded in Rome in 1925 by her parents Edoardo Fendi and Adele Casagrande, making it famous all over the world. Each of the sisters manages a different area of the maison (from marketing to design, to accessories).
It is also their decision to involve an up-and-coming Karl Lagerfeld. In 1964 a boutique and an atelier were opened in via Borgognona, among the most exclusive of Roman shopping, while in 1968 Bloomingdale, an American department store, bought the entire collection of Fendi bags and began the success of the double F maison also overseas. In 2018 Franca published the book ‘Sei con me – Our great unique love story,’ for the types of Rizzoli, opening the trunk of family memories for the first time and turning to her husband Luigi Formilli to retrace the story of his life: childhood, the close and sincere relationship with the four sisters, the great love, marriage, children and grandchildren. But also the darkest moments of her husband’s illness, against the backdrop of a changing Italy, up to the sale of the company to the French luxury giant LVMH.
