Four Dutch people died in a serious traffic accident on the German A3 motorway on Sunday. The accident happened between Kleve and Emmerik, not far from the Dutch border, ANP news agency reports. Three cars with a Dutch license plate were involved in the accident, at least two of which were Porsches. It is not yet clear whether the Dutch knew each other.
The accident started when a 42-year-old man, who was driving a Porsche Cayman with a 37-year-old woman, lost control. This was probably due to the heavy rain. The car ended up in a ditch. The couple decided to wait for help along the road. It came when a 39-year-old man saw them and stopped at the side of the road. Other media previously reported that this man also drove a Porsche, but that has not yet been confirmed.
Things went wrong when a third driver, a 56-year-old Dutchman in a Porsche 911, also lost control of the wheel. He hit the three people who were standing on the emergency lane and ended up with his car in the guardrail. The 37-year-old woman and the 39-year-old man died on the spot; later, the 42-year-old Porsche driver and the third driver also died of their injuries. There was another person in the Porsche 911. He was slightly injured but survived the accident.
German police are investigating the accident. The A3 is closed in the direction of Cologne. It is unknown whether the drivers of the Porsches knew each other. However, the police have said that they have no indications that the cars were racing.
