St. Andrä – plane crash in Lungau, Austria. Four people died on Thursday (November 2nd), as the fire department explained in a statement on Friday morning. All four occupants of a sports bike lost their lives in the accident.
At around 3:45 p.m., witnesses saw a plane losing altitude in the sky. An emergency call then started a rescue chain, according to the fire department. Just in April, a small plane with two passengers crashed in a parking lot in Austria.
“Massively rammed into the ground”: Plane on the way to Salzburg crashes in Lungau
First, the operations manager of the St. Andrä fire department reached the crash site. It turned out that it was a Cirrus SR 20 motorized aircraft with rescue equipment and not a glider as initially reported. “The aircraft is lying on the roof in impassable terrain and has rammed itself massively into the ground as a result of the crash,” the fire department said.
According to initial police investigations, the plane’s occupants took off from Zagreb and were on their way to Austria to an airfield in Salzburg. In addition to the St. Andrä fire department, emergency services from the Tamsweg fire department and the Ramingstein fire department were also on duty – a total of 103 rescuers. Most recently, an off-duty pilot even tried to intentionally crash a commercial airliner.
Danger of explosion: Explosives experts recovering bodies after a plane crash in Austria
The fire department explains: “Due to the rescue device (emergency parachute) not being deployed and the severe deformation of the aircraft, it was not possible to rescue the trapped lifeless people.” Due to the risk of explosions, a barrier circle had to be set up within a radius of 150 meters around the crashed machine. “Two explosives experts from the executive branch from Graz defused the rescue facility, which was equipped with 800 to 1,000 grams of explosives.”
The forensics team and an aviation expert then carried out initial documentation of the accident. The aircraft was only allowed to be moved after the police had given clearance so that the lifeless people could be rescued by the fire department and mountain rescue. “The removal of the aircraft wreckage was challenging due to the steep terrain, the soft ground and the heavy, persistent rain.” The aircraft wreckage was transported away for further examination using a special vehicle.
