Porsche, finally. In Mexico City, home to the second round of the 2022 FIA Formula E World Championship, the German manufacturer managed to bring home the first success in its history since entering the category.
It was Pascal Wehrlein who succeeded in this feat, good at capitalizing on the pole position obtained in the afternoon. But Porsche’s success came in a thunderous way, because it even managed to celebrate the double thanks to Andre Lotterer’s second place finish.
Although the two standard bearers of the German manufacturer dominated the second part of the race, in the middle of the E-Prix they were forced to manage their energy to be able to complete the race without too many problems and they did it in an excellent way.
Energy management was perhaps the main key to the second round of the season, with Porsche succeeding in its intent to perfection, bringing home a race without history.
Edoardo Mortara, who arrived in Mexico as leader of the classification, was one of the great protagonists of the race but had to slow down after having commanded for several laps. The Swiss, compared to the two Porsche drivers, was unable to manage energy well and suffered not only the attacks of the German cars, but also those of the two DS Techeetahs.
So Jean-Eric Vergne took the opportunity to finish in third place, even if just over 9 “behind the Porsches. Antonio Felix Da Costa, champion of the series two years ago, completed the race just off the podium in front of Mortara During a brawl with the winner Wehrlein, the Portuguese of DS Techeetah also lost the front left wheel arch.
Mercedes were missing this weekend, with Nyck De Vries sixth and Stoffel Vandoorne even 12th and more than 27 seconds behind the winner of the race. Also noteworthy is the retirement of Antonio Giovinazzi after a rough fight with Dan Ticktum. Both rookies are paying not only for the necessary approach to such a particular category as Formula E, but also for the lack of competitiveness of their respective teams.
At the end of the second round of the season, Edoardo Mortara remains at the top of the overall Drivers standings with 43 points, 6 more than the reigning champion of the series, Nyck De Vries and 13 more than the first Porsche driver, Pascal Wehrlein.
