Football Fifa takes action against Russia – home matches are relocated and played without spectators

The Russian national team will also be given a new nickname.

International football association Fifa has imposed sanctions on Russia after the country invaded Ukraine. Fifa decided on measures together with the European Football Association (UEFA) and following the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee.

For the time being, Russia will not play any home matches in international competitions at all. These matches are played on neutral ground and without spectators.

The Russian national team will perform under the name Football Union of Russia (RFU). The Russian flag and national anthem are also not used at match events.

Fifa, Uefa and the IOC will monitor the situation and decide later whether Russia should be completely excluded from the competition. Russia is required to take swift action to calm the situation in Ukraine.
