“Food for profit”, the documentary that reveals the dark side of the meat industry, is becoming a great success at the box office. In just over a month of screenings, the independent film – produced by Mescalito Film and directed by Giulia Innocenzi and Paolo D'Ambrosi – has already grossed almost 300 thousand euros (Cinetel data updated to 3 April), placing itself almost daily in the top ten of the most visas in Italy.
A small investigative documentary costing a few thousand euros competes with the public with films costing several million. This is a surprising result and a case to be carefully analyzed by those working in the cinema sector.
On April 3rd, to give an idea, “Food for profit” totaled approximately the same number of viewers as the Oscar-winning film “The Zone of Interest” and “May December”, a drama with two world stars of the caliber by Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman.
“Food for profit” reveals the connections between intensive farming, farmers' lobbies and political institutions, highlighting – also through infiltrators with hidden cameras – how the money from the Common Agricultural Policy is in many cases destined to companies that mistreat animals, pollute the environment and pose a danger to future pandemics.
