The passage of the DANA through Mallorca has left heavy flooding in Portocristo (Manacor), where the overflowing of the Na Llebrona torrent has swept away boats, terraces and vehicles, which have been left semi-submerged by the rising water level. The 112 emergency service has warned that, during the morning of this Monday, the torrent could overflow again.
Until 2:00 p.m., the Emergency service has attended to a total of 141 incidents in Mallorca, the majority due to flooding of basements (49) and on public roads (39). Of the total, 46 have been registered in Manacor and 25 in Campos, the municipalities most affected by DANA. The teams have also provided services in Palma, Calvià, Montuïri, Marratxí, Ses Salines, Pollença and Felanitx, Vilafranca, Algaida, Llucmajor, Binissalem, Sant Llorenç, Sóller, Porreres and Sencelles, according to the information broadcast by 112.
In Portocristo, the Manacor Local Police, the municipal brigade and the personnel of the municipal services company continue working on the incidents caused by the rains. The actions focus on the overflows of the Riuet, on the beach of s’Estany d’en Mas and on the landslides of rural roads, beaches and highways. In the case of the beach, the storm caused 30 parasols to fall, dismantled the walkway and knocked down the lifeguard tower. There have been no personal injuries but, precisely in this area, two people who were inside a car have been rescued.
Likewise, about 20 vehicles have been affected by the overflowing of the Portocristo torrent and have been swept away by the water. The troops continue working to restore normality in these two areas, as well as on several roads where there have been landslides. As for roads, the Sa Vall road in Manacor remains closed, and the underground car park in Plaza de Sant Jaume, which had been temporarily closed due to the entry of water, has been reopened.
For their part, Mallorca Firefighters have carried out five rescues of people who had been trapped as a result of rising water on roads and coves. The incidents have taken place mainly in the Levante and Migjorn areas of Mallorca, including the rescue of a vehicle that was trapped on the road between Campos and Colònia de Sant Jordi. The troops have also acted due to accumulations at the Rafa Nadal Academy and in the torrent in the Manacor slaughterhouse area.
The Civil Guard, meanwhile, has helped several drivers who have been trapped in their vehicles when they were surprised by the storm and rising water. As reported by Benemérita in a press release, Citizen Security patrols, as well as the Traffic Detachment and the Underwater Activities Group (GEAS), participated in the devices deployed due to the storm that hit Mallorca.
The Aemet, for its part, has warned that this Monday the “most adverse” part of the episode will begin and it is likely that DANA will move towards the southwest until it is near the Gulf of Cádiz, while at the same time it will produce cyclogenesis. at low levels giving rise to a drop in surface area around the southern coast of the peninsula between the afternoon and night. In this way, DANA will “most likely” evolve into a cold storm.
As a consequence, an easterly wind will be established in the Mediterranean that will intensify on Tuesday, favoring the arrival of a large amount of humidity to the east of the peninsula. Very strong showers are expected without ruling out that they may reach torrential intensity locally, in addition to being persistent and accompanied by very strong gusts of wind.
Regarding the location of the heaviest rains, on Monday it is most likely that the maximum levels will be reached in Tarragona and Castellón, as well as in the Strait and, from the afternoon, also in the southeast of the peninsula.
