“The role of the clinical engineer in difficult military contexts and in theaters of war is to be able to manage and guarantee the safety and efficiency of medical devices at any time and situation. It is therefore necessary that, alongside the military forces, it can guarantee that in emergency situations, such as the recovery of the wounded, under attack or in the management of the military field hospital – therefore also in support of local civilians – that the medical device is always efficient, ready to use and available”. This was said by Andrea Fisher, of the board of the Italian Association of Clinical Engineers (Aiic), speaking today at the symposium dedicated to the management of biomedical technologies in difficult contexts, within the national Aiic conference underway in Rome until 18 May.
Specifically, this expert is responsible for ensuring “the efficiency, for example, of batteries or certain accessories that may be exclusive to the theater of war. The management and arrival of technologies in these realities – explains Fisher – is decidedly complex as the military carriers are often already occupied with other supplies such as medicines and ammunition. Therefore, having a good supply or any stocks of devices already present in the various military locations is essential, as is maintenance to ensure that it is not necessary, in an emergency, to provide for new supplies or replacements”.
Going to carry out maintenance on “equipment and devices in situations such as Afghanistan or the war theater now in the Gaza Strip – underlines the Aiic engineer – is decidedly difficult because there is also no possibility of having spare parts and accessories”. These technologies used in difficult situations such as war are “adapted to particular needs such as military vehicles, wheeled or mobile, such as a helicopter”. In these cases they must withstand “vibrations, dust, extreme temperatures, different pressures, or – he concludes – the presence of water”.
