According to Daniel Ahmad, a well-known gaming market analyst at Niko Partners, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is “underperforming” in terms of sales and that the copies purchased are approx half of those of Final Fantasy 7 Remake in the same period of time.
The information was shared on X, in response to a couple of other posts from users of the platform, where he added that he expects Rebirth will have a shorter business cycle of the previous episode before any initiative related to PlayStation Plus.
Negative data, but how much?
Ahmad did not add further details on the matter nor did he reel off precise numbers. Yesterday we talked to you about how Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth could have sold approximately 2.2 million copies, according to an estimate by Ampere Analysis based on the number of active players at launch, although this is a calculation with wide margin of error.
In comparison, Final Fantasy 7 Remake had reached 3.5 million at launch in April 2020, and then reached the ceiling of 5 million in August, while Final Fantasy 16 reached 3 million copies in about a week.
It must be said, however, that, if confirmed, the information shared by Ahmad would paint a less catastrophic picture than many might imagine, although certainly not positive.
First of all, we are talking about a sequel to a trilogy that places the emphasis on the plot, so in these cases a new chapter rarely manages to sell more than the previous one. Furthermore, Final Fantasy 7 Remake could count on one at launch installed base almost double that of Rebirth: in the spring of 2020 the PS4 had exceeded the ceiling of 100 million units sold, compared to the 54.8 million PS5 indicated by Sony last February.
