Unexpected podium
He can smile at the end of the Misano-2 weekend Marc MárquezThe star of the Gresini team did not repeat the incredible success of two weeks ago on this same track, but considering the distance, in terms of performance, that was seen throughout the weekend between him and the Martin-Bagnaia-Bastianini trio, this third step of the podium it’s more than #93 himself could have expected. It’s no coincidence that for two days the person directly involved has been repeating that his goal was fourth place. That would have been his final placing had it not been for Pecco Bagnaia’s fall six laps from the end.
“My goal, I’ve said it many times these days, was to finish fourth. I kept an eye on Acosta throughout the race and then, when he fell, on Bezzecchi. Pecco’s fall gave us the podium. I’m happy for the team, as it’s their home race.”declared the six-time MotoGP champion in a press conference.
The contact at the top
But what caused the most stir were the words that Marquez released, both in press conference which later in the classic post-race meeting with the media, regarding the Bastianini-Martin contact that decided the race.
“The overtaking was at the limit – said Marquez – it’s true that it’s one of the overtakings that I did too, but if during that overtaking you go off the track or the other driver ends up on the ground, it is punishable. It is like this and it has always been like this. I have made these overtakings, I have also made mistakes, in which by overtaking in a too optimistic way the other driver fell or I went off the track and I was rightly given a penalty. Bastianini’s overtaking is clean, correct and well done until the two wheels go off the track. If he had stayed on the track there, there would have been no discussion. In my opinion he should have been penalized by moving back one position. But the Race Direction decided differently”.
