Carlos Tavares is convinced that the Fiat 500 electric has ample room for improvement. The CEO of Stellantis spoke at a press conference about the results of the electric Cinquino, explaining the reasons why the car is experiencing such great success. And that it could have much more.
“In Mirafiori we could produce triple what we are doing now, as the electric 500 is the best-selling in Europe and we could sell even more. However, the limit is not due to factory production capacity or battery packs, but to shortage of semiconductors. In 2021 we produced 45,000, we could easily double to 90,000. If needed, we could triple, in fact. But it will depend on the chips. There have been great improvements in the quality of work and in the organization of factories, we are at the highest world standards thanks also to the workers. If we can solve the supply problems we can do much more, we are trying to remove all obstacles“Said Tavares.
However, there is one element that could collide with a high demand for electric Fiat 500s: the lack of infrastructure. “It takes between three and five years to make a car and a good ten years to create an infrastructure. However, it takes at least 20 years to have all the clean energy needed to support a world of electric cars. I personally believe that light hybrids are the best alternative for the environment: emissions can be reduced, only with these cars, by 50%, with a low cost for motorists.“, Explained the CEO of the automotive multinational.
However, Tavares confirms his ideas on the automotive market. Stellantis will therefore continue to invest in electric, because if the market is forced to embrace only this type of car, then it will have to be ready, while considering the Chinese threat with its low-cost cars thanks to the possession of raw materials. But the CEO does not fail, once again, to underline that the internal combustion engine could still contribute to reducing emissions, in its future technical generations.
