The Montreal circuit gives on his return a nice Grand Prix. Max Verstappen winsagain, but this time without dominating from the point of view of the pass. It was indeed the Ferrari of a excellent Carlos Sainz the fastest car on the track, with a measurable advantage in about 2 tenths per turn. But to build victory you need first of all a complete perfect weekendstarting with qualification, and sometimes a bit of luck, which in Virtual Safety Car situations could have helped Sainz take the lead instead of penalizing him even more. The F1-75 number 55 was however very well balanced, with a nice mix of traction and draw length and good handling in the mixed. The feature “stop and go”Of the Canadian track forces the teams to move the balance towards the rear and Sainz found himself in a car that fit much more to his driving style compared to other races run in the season. The result was one solid race of the Spanish with one central stint particularly impressive, given the 27 laps covered by Sainz almost all on the same tenth, as usually only great pilots can do. With the different strategies due to the various Virtual Safety Cars and Safety Cars it became difficult (and probably not very reliable) to compare the drivers’ stints separately, so we compared all the laps launched in the racethus excluding the first lap, all the laps in and out of the pits and all the laps in which the race was neutralized for safety.
From the calculation emerges what we have already mentioned, that is a Carlos Sainz fastest on the track with an average of 230 thousandths per lap better than Verstappen. Behind them Lewis Hamiltonhowever, close to RedBull in average with just over a tenth of an advantage over George Russell. The two W13s we had completely opposite aerodynamic configurationshowever, expressing performances that are all in all similar, confirming one Mercedes really complicated to interpret and fine-tune. Obviously, counting the entire race Charles Leclerc is much slower than the leading group, being engaged in his comeback. Leclerc’s recovery from nineteenth to fifth place was still very good, and without the mistake at the pit stopthe Monegasque would have almost certainly battled with at least one of the two Mercedes. However, one was noticed conspicuous lack of traction coming out of the hairpin, in total antithesis to what we had seen during the free practice on Friday. The difference was made by the choice to mount a lighter rear wing on car number 16, having, above all, the moving part of the wider DRS, with the aim of improving top speed and ensuring easier overtaking during the comeback. In reality, the fact that in Canada you enter the long straight from a hairpin bend that runs at around 50 km / h has meant that the Ferrari plan worked halfway for a variety of factors. First of all the light rear of Leclerc’s car inevitably expressed less traction than seen during free practice. One greater slippage of the rear axle it then led to greater wear of the rear tiresespecially on a track that has become totally “green” after the rain on Saturday. There is more though: the impression was also that the great level of torque shown by the power unit of Maranello at the beginning of the season in this race either partly failed. The data confirm a work center of the Leclerc propulsion unit located at slightly higher revs (about 150 revolutions per minute) than usual, usually an indication of a lower torque level delivered by the internal combustion engine. Probably therefore, given the starting position of Leclerc, the engineers of the red number 16 opted to stay more conservative on the power front to ensure more peace of mind in the next races with the two units homologated in Canada now available to the Monegasque.
So summarizing the potential Ferrari was on the track, albeit only a little, higher than RedBull but what however, it was not enough to take victory. We don’t think Sainz actually has great responsibilities, at least in regards to the race. The pace of the Spaniard was constant and very fast, but when there is someone like Max Verstappen in front the task becomes very hard, ask Lewis Hamilton or Charles Leclerc for confirmation. The Dutchman has, in fact, raced once again showing all his talent, starting very well and then holding on in the last phase of the race, traveled without the slightest burr despite the pressure from Ferrari behind him. Max’s guide is that of the real championsand, to beat him and his Red Bull, it will take a definitive gear change by Maranello. The F1-75 continues to express indeed world-class performancebut from the world championship they continue, for one reason or another, not to be the results. We do not want to be irreverent, but there is a scene in the cinema that recalls this start of the season of the redhead, and that is the one in which the three protagonists of the film are exalted on the beach, telling about the deeds carried out during a football match, but then wondering how it was possible that with all that skill the game was over 10 to 3 for the opponents. In this case the result is 7 Grands Prix to 2 for RedBullbut with the difference that the match it’s not over yet and that the Maranello team has put one on track record-breaking car, seriously and not to joke. They are still missing four races before the summer break and if Ferrari fails to reverse the results, the second phase of the championship could turn into more than a comeback. an impossible undertaking, also thinking about the inevitable further penalties that will come with the updates on the Power Unit. The perception, however, is that we are not the only ones to think so. We have read, in fact, in the words said by Mattia Binotto after the race a new attitude, much more “agonistically bad” compared to the first phase of the season. From the language of the Team Principal of the Scuderia they are sentences of justification disappeared of any kind, and they are instead clear analyzes of responsibilities appeared, always without pointing the finger, but also without compromisestarting from error to pit stop up to that in Sainz’s qualification at the last corner cost him the front row. Rumors also tell of a heated exchange between Binotto and Toto Wolff on the question of anti porpoising rulesconfirming a Red Team Principal in one aggressive phaseeager to fight for what the next race will perhaps become the most important phase of the championship. The Grand Prix of Silverstone it will in fact be the next milestone of the season. RedBull will bring a major package of updates and the track is one of those it decisively rewards the quality of the cars. And from there Ferrari can no longer afford to hit the track proving to be the “fastest on paper” or to have a “good weekend”. The imperative now for the redhead is just win because RedBull succeeds from 6 races in a roweven when it’s not the fastest.
