The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has spoken this Friday in Valencia about yesterday’s announcement by the President of the Government, the socialist Pedro Sánchez, that he will allocate 3,000 million to reduce the impact of the energy crisis in 40% of the homes. “Anything to help low-income people who can’t even pay for food, at first yes, let’s see the fine print and see if it’s interesting,” he has stated about the position of his party. The leader of the popular party has insisted that he still does not know “what the proposal consists of” and has once again charged against the Executive’s economic policies because they do not create “the conditions for people to invest and create jobs”, as postulated by the party of him.
The president of the PP has participated in an act organized by the newspaper The Provinces in which he has submitted to the questions of the journalists of this medium. In his intervention, the leader of the popular has criticized the lack of an industrial policy of the Government, which in his opinion will cause the destruction of employment and will lead to an even more serious problem than the increase in energy prices. Feijóo, 61, has stated that he knows from his own experience the drama of the strike, as it happened to his father. “We are people of the street, despite wearing suits and ties. I am from the village, I have sold preserves, bulk sugar, fodder for cattle, I am a street person; lately I’ve been doing something else, but I’ve experienced difficulties”, said the president of Galicia between 2009 and February 2022 and previously, a senior official in the Government of José María Aznar between 1996 and 2004, regarding a question that he alluded to whether he knew the opinion of the street about the difficulties of the approaching winter.
The interview started with one of the most current political issues, such as the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), which has been paralyzed for almost four years due to the PP’s refusal to agree with the Government on a replacement and which has caused a institutional crisis with the resignation of the president of the governing body of the judges and president of the Supreme Court, Carlos Lesmes. Just four days ago the President of the Government and the leader of the PP gave each other a “last chance” to undertake this negotiation, which is being carried out with great discretion. Feijóo has warned that his formation will not validate political profiles in the CGPJ and has defended reinforced majorities of three fifths to “depoliticize” the appointments and decisions made by this body, to achieve “greater objectivity.”
Feijóo has pointed out that the PP agrees to maintain the current election system but with the commitment to “immediately modify the election to comply with European regulations.” “It makes no sense nor do we give a message of judicial independence if the Government appoints a minister who resigns in the morning and appoints him as attorney general in the afternoon,” he stressed, adding that it also makes no sense that a minister who is a magistrate can be dismissed and return to court the next day at the National Court or the Supreme Court. As he has insisted, it is about “regulating the revolving doors” for a “greater independence” of judges and magistrates.
In addition, Feijóo has stressed that it is necessary to “increase the quorum to appoint judges and magistrates from the Council” so that “there are no doubts that this is not a progressive and conservative majority.” “We can reach an agreement? Yes. If the Government wants to reach an agreement, let’s reach an agreement. If what the Government wants is, I have these 10, they don’t have to meet any requirements, I have this man, who is a Minister of Justice in this CCAA of the PSOE, I am going to appoint him a member of the CGPJ; or I have another man who is Secretary of State, I am going to dismiss him and appoint him to the CGPJ. We cannot validate that, ”he insisted.

“What worries me the most is that people know that we want judicial independence”, highlighted the leader of the PP. “And let him know that I do not want to appoint PP positions in the General Council. I am not going to do it. I am never going to appoint, if I have the opportunity, a State Attorney General Minister, nor am I going to appoint him a member of the General Council of the Judiciary, nor am I going to send him to a room of the Supreme Court. It’s that if not, I’m killing something as basic as judicial independence, which is the guarantee of the rule of law”, he stressed.
Accompanied in the public by the president of the PP of the Valencian Community, Carlos Mazón, Feijóo has supported him in his identity and financial demands. In a more local key, he has maintained that the need to adjust the financing system and increase the amount received by the Valencian Community and Murcia is “absolutely objective”, and has asserted: “The Valencian Community is, whichever way you look at it, the worse financed together with Murcia”. Feijóo has stressed that the current model is “the one approved by the PSOE with the Catalan tripartite in 2009”, although he has admitted that the PP did not change it when he had the opportunity, during his term between 2011 and 2018.
Feijóo has wondered why a Valencian and state government governed by the same party has not changed the system and has considered that perhaps, if the debate is opened, Catalonia will ask for a “concert” like the Basque. He has also considered that, if he were Valencian, he would “bring to the negotiating table” the debt generated from underfinancing.
