The leader of the PP will be appointed senator for Galicia in the coming days along with his right-hand man Miguel Tellado | He will occupy the seat of Juan Carlos Serrano, who will present his resignation on Monday
Five weeks after being elected as leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo faces a new phase in his project to renew the party. After abandoning his position as president of the Xunta, the Galician will culminate the landing in Madrid with the election of him as a senator by regional appointment. The successor of Pablo Casado thus guarantees an institutional platform to be able to measure himself in a monthly face-to-face with Pedro Sánchez, in the control sessions with the Government. Although so far this year the president has only confronted the opposition in this House on just two occasions, on February 15 and April 26.
Formation sources confirmed that the conservative leader will occupy the seat in the upper house that will be vacated by Juan Carlos Serrano, the former mayor of Portomarín (Lugo), who will present his resignation on Monday. In this way, they point out from Genoa, in the coming days “his departure from the Xunta will be formalized, the process of replacing him in the Galician PP will be completed, and his arrival in the upper house will be activated.” Being a senator will also allow Feijóo to have legal status and for the Supreme Court to rule on any judicial process in which he could be involved.
Within the framework of this renewal, Elena Muñoz is also expected to resign as senator tomorrow, and the person proposed to replace her will be Miguel Tellado, deputy secretary of party organization, and one of Feijóo’s most trusted people. Predictably, Elías Bendodo, general coordinator of the popular and councilor in the Junta de Andalucía, will also do so, although in his case it will not be until after the elections that are held in this community on June 19.
Feijóo announced weeks ago that the transition in the Xunta and in the PP of Galicia would be “very fast” and would culminate in May. The process will be concentrated in the next fifteen days. On Tuesday, the investiture plenary session of Alfonso Rueda will begin, who will take office as president of the Xunta next Saturday. Eight days later, at the Pontevedra congress, to which he will arrive as the only candidate, he will be elected president of the party in this community.
It will be then when the leader of the popular will hold a meeting with his deputies and senators in Madrid as he himself advanced after assuming the reins of the PP last April 2. The idea is a joint meeting that he will chair together with Cuca Gamarra and Javier Maroto, the two spokesmen in Parliament, and in which he could advance the changes that he plans to undertake in both parliamentary groups.
Reorganization
In Congress it is not entirely clear what will happen. Most of the deputies expect that Gamarra, also general secretary of the popular party, will continue to lead the spokesperson and will confront Sánchez as number two in the party in control of the Executive and in the debates that take place in the chamber. In any case, the election of another person of weight is expected to support Gamarra to carry out the day-to-day activities of the group.
In the Senate, however, all the pools assume that there will be a change in the spokesperson and that Maroto, who was ratified as senator for Castilla y León last Friday, will have to step aside. It is presumed that Feijóo is looking for the profile of a woman, and within the parliamentary group there are names of solvency such as Ana Isabel Alós, former mayor of Huesca and current secretary general of the Aragonese PP, or Sofía Acedo, senator for Melilla.
The leader of the PP also has to decide which people will occupy the area secretaries and if he needs any more deputy secretaries to finish off the leadership leadership, as he hinted in Seville. In his environment they insist that he will address this chapter once he leaves the Galician presidency.
