Volvo decides to invest in new generation fast charging. And it does so by allying itself with Breathe Battery Technologies, a company specialized in the performance of batteries: the agreement signed by the parties establishes a record, since it makes the Swedish car manufacturer the first in the world to have access to the latest version of the charging software patented and based on algorithms developed by Breathe itself.
Reduced charging times
This technology will be used on future new generation fully electric Volvo cars: for the latter, in fact, the Swedish brand plans to reduce up to 30% the time needed to recharge an exclusively electric car from 10 to 80% of the state of charge with the same energy density and autonomy. According to what was announced by Volvo itself, the improvement of charging times it will last for the entire life cycle of the battery, without the state of health being compromised.
Based on algorithms
There are some differences between the software developed by Breathe and traditional step charging. While the latter is based on predefined rules, in fact, the technology created by Volvo's new ally relies on the adaptive charging to dynamically adjust the battery in real time, thus achieving significantly shorter charging times. Everything revolves around the use of algorithms, thanks to which the charging process is managed according to the health conditions of the battery: the objective is to avoid the risk of lithium platingwhich can harm performance and battery life.
For the benefit of electric cars
“The investment and commercial partnership with Breathe helps us solve a problem well known to those who use electric cars and to make the charging performance of our cars even more competitive – said Ann-Sofie Ekberg, CEO of the Volvo Cars Tech Fund – The reduction of charging times, in a range in which customers usually fast charge, represents an important step in the right direction in a process that sees us committed to enhancing electric mobility and making it available to a greater number of people.”
