“Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets” arrived in theaters on April 14. The film tells us about the beginning of the magical war between Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwaldwho in parallel try to overcome their youthful love represented in a blood pact.
In this third installment, the evil wizard Grindelwald is played by Mads Mikkelsenwho replaced Johnny Depp when Warner Bros. decided to terminate any contract with the actor due to the scandalous case he has been facing against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about his role as the film’s villain, Mikkelsen said the creative team decided not to provide an in-universe explanation for Grindelwald’s new appearance. “That was very deliberate. Everyone knows why he changed actors. It would be almost like an easter egg to point out that we swapped actors. Hopefully we drag them with the first scene and from there they accept this world”, was what the Danish actor said.
Mikkelsen and Depp as Grindelwald
Although Mikkelsen plays Grindelwald in “Dumbledore’s secrets”, the character was initially handled by Johnny Depp in “Fantastic beasts and where to find them” and in “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald”. Warner Bros. chose to replace Depp in 2020 following the actor’s defamation lawsuit against The Sun, which published an op-ed by Depp’s ex-wife Amber Heard calling him a “wife beater.”
Given this, Mikkelsen joined to play the role, a decision that at first was not to the fans’ liking, but after the premiere of the film they have been able to highlight the actor’s good performance.
