Famine Save the Children estimates more than a quarter of a million children starved to death in East Africa this year

Malnutrition is at least a contributing factor in about half of the deaths of children under the age of five in the region. Less than half of acutely malnourished children in East Africa are currently receiving treatment.

The report is based on data collected by the UN. According to the organization, the number of children who have died is a conservative estimate. The eight East African countries surveyed are Burundi, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda.
