With an official communication, Liberty Media explained its position on the scenario that took shape after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Yesterday evening the Formula 1 team principals gathered in the Barcelona paddock to discuss the position to be taken in view of the Russian Grand Prix, scheduled for next 25 September in Sochi.
“The FIA Formula 1 World Championship stops in many nations around the world – reads the Liberty Media statement – bringing with us a positive vision and unity among nations. We are watching the unfolding of events in Ukraine with sadness and shock, and we hope for a quick and peaceful resolution of events. Formula 1, FIA and the representatives of the teams discussed the position of our sport, reaching the common conclusion that it is impossible to compete in the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances ”.
An interlocutory position, which poses strong doubts on the conduct of the race without officially announcing its cancellation from the 2022 calendar. It is likely that Liberty Media will need time to contractually move with the promoters of the Russian event before officially communicating the cancellation of the Grand Prize, but considering the mood of the paddock, many insiders have now taken for granted that this year there will be no trip to Sochi. The official position of the FIA and Liberty will be clearer in the coming weeks.
