Pirelli has decided to increase the minimum inflation pressure of the rear tires by 1 PSI: the indication of the sole tire supplier brings to 22.5 PSI the minimum value which until yesterday was set at 21.5 PSI.
The Milanese manufacturer decided to intervene with the support of the FIA technicians after analyzing the data collected in free practice, since the resolution of the prescriptions had been decided by looking at the simulations that the teams provided.
Nobody expected to see a particularly accentuated porpoising on some single-seaters that made driving on the straights very problematic for the drivers. The engineers led by Mario Isola have found that the carcass of the rear tires is subjected to much greater stresses than those that had been foreseen and simulated due to the excessive frequency of hopping, especially in the long straight of over 2 km.
To prevent safety issues from arising, Pirelli has asked for an increase in the pressure of the rear tires which are the ones most subjected to stress with porpoising.
In the third free practice session it will be important to understand who will benefit from this choice, perhaps having to review some set up choices …
