“What happened to the others? I had a horrible time.” Max Verstappen, still intent on doing the return lap at the end of Q3 of Sprint Qualifying, commented thus on his best time which will lead him to start from pole in the Sprint Race of the Miami Grand Prix which will be held tomorrow.
The Dutch driver achieved the best time in 1’27″641, 108 thousandths faster than the first of his rivals, the Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. An unexpected pole, because Verstappen, in the first part of the central sector, made a mistake rather evident but which, on balance, had no influence on the result.
“If I have to be honest, I felt my only fast lap in Q3 was really terrible. But yes, I don’t know, maybe Q3 was very difficult in terms of finding the right window of tire use. And already in Q2 I didn’t I felt so comfortable.”
“In Q3 things didn’t improve, I didn’t improve much by switching from the Medium to the Soft tyres. But I’m very happy to take this start at the pole of the Sprint. Today, however, it certainly wasn’t nice to drive. There could be many reasons for this, because in free practice I felt really comfortable. But in qualifying I wasn’t.
The gaps on the flying lap were very small. Max tried to give an explanation for what happened, claiming however that he didn’t understand what happened in Q3 after seeing an impressive McLaren in the hands of both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
“I honestly don’t know why. I mean, it could be the design of the track. After free practice I thought I was fast and could fight for pole. In qualifying, however, no. But in the end, for some reason, I’ll start first. I don’t know what happened to the other cars on the last lap.”
