The German failed to get through Q1, qualifying only 19th, a far cry from what he had managed to do so far this season.
The gamble of running full wet tires at the start saw Hulkenberg and teammate Kevin Magnussen sprint through the top 10 in the first eight laps of Sunday’s race, although both drivers fell back as conditions improved.
With the retirement of both Ferrari drivers and Sergio Perez, Haas seemingly missed the opportunity to capitalize and take home good points, especially with Alpine placing Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon in the points.
But Hulkenberg said: “The missed opportunity was on Saturday and in general throughout the weekend.”
“The problem we had with my car is that somehow it’s not completely right, I think, aerodynamically or somewhere. After the race I still have the feeling that I have a problem, that I’m not 100% of what we should be. Obviously, you do what you can with what you have available.”

“But obviously, also not having Friday, not having time to react after the race… it was a difficult weekend, given the circumstances.”
Inviting the team to review the problems to find a solution ahead of the next Spanish Grand Prix, Hulkenberg added: “All weekend, especially on my side of the garage, and from the first lap, I didn’t feel right and happy with the car, and we need to investigate what was going on because this really affected our weekend.”
“Everything that happened, and then the qualifying, cost us a better result, because I’m sure that with a better qualifying, if we had started further ahead, we would have scored some points. So it’s a missed opportunity.”
