The fans who waited behind Fiorano’s goals this morning to see the SF21 brought to the track by Robert Shwartzman in action had to postpone the appointment until tomorrow.
The Scuderia technicians were ready as scheduled to kick off the first seasonal tests, but a ‘stop’ arrived which froze the activity.
The reason that blocked the tests is linked to the use of last year’s single-seater, blocked at the last minute by the FIA pending updates on how the definition of ‘Previous Cars’ will be applied in 2022.
Until last year, the cars authorized by the International Federation for private testing had to date back to at least two years prior to the current season. The substantial change in the technical regulations introduced in 2022 had led the teams to discuss the possibility of using the 2021 single-seaters for the private tests scheduled for this season, as there are few points in common with the current cars.
The topic had been discussed at a meeting of the Sporting Advisory Committee, with a favorable opinion from the teams.
Following this meeting, Ferrari considered it possible to use the SF21, but after having informed the FIA of the test scheduled at Fiorano, the answer arrived that effectively blocked the tests.
“Waiting to receive an update from the FIA on the modalities of application in 2022 of the definition of” Test Previous Cars “which establishes which car can be used in this type of test – said Ferrari – it was decided that in the session a 2018 SF71H will be used “.
The impression is that the International Federation has not yet included in the sporting regulations the agreement taken by the teams, given that at the moment the latest version (of the last 8.12) still reports the definition of ‘Previous Cars’ as cars dating back to two seasons previous.
According to some ‘rumors’ collected by Motorsport.com, in reality a test with a 2021 car may already have been carried out in Bahrain by a non-leading team, but at the moment there is no official confirmation.
Ferrari has made it known that testing will start tomorrow anyway, a day that in the original plans foresees the presence on the track of Charles Leclerc.
