EJournalism professor Bill Grueskin called it a “scoop of the century”. The well-known “SCOTUS Blog”, which observes the Supreme Court of the United States, reported on an “earthquake”. And CNN anchor Anderson Cooper announced the news from Kyiv, where he actually reports on the war in Ukraine. It was just after half past eight on Monday evening when the online magazine “Politico” published the draft of the judge’s report on the subject of abortion. The content of the 98 pages, marked as “first draft”, was not unexpected, but its clarity shocked many Americans. Samuel Alito did it for the conservative majority of judges supreme court clear that they wanted to abolish the current abortion law – among other things because it was not “historically rooted” in the constitutional tradition of the country. Judges are currently deliberating on Mississippi’s restrictive rule and may use the opportunity to review the decision in Roe v. Wade, which has regulated access to abortion since 1973.
“Politico” reported proudly about his journalistic coup that no such draft of a judge’s decision had ever reached the press while the deliberations were still ongoing. The paper was exchanged among the judges in February and recently reached reporters Josh Gerstein and Alexander Ward. At the editorial office, the group of those who knew about the upcoming “scoop” was small — most staffers were as surprised as Americans were when the story went live Monday night. It is unclear whether there have been any changes to the draft since February – the actual decision is not expected until June. However, it is considered likely that the conservative majority wants to abolish the current right to an abortion. This majority also stands if the presiding judge John Roberts should join the three liberal judges.
