Volvo has defined the EX30 (which we tested on the road in recent days) as a fundamental car for the company's electrification ambitions. “Sustainability is the fundamental key of this car, represents a decisive step in the roadmap that we have set ourselves to achieve zero emissions by 2040.”he told us Bob Lonardi, PR manager for Volvo Italy. Volvo's objective is ambitious, but step by step it is getting closer and closer.
Growth visibly
A look at the numbers, starting from global situation on the market. In 2023 the Swedish giant achieved a new global sales record with 708,716 units, up by +15% compared to 2022. In this context, a significant increase in sales of electrified cars should be noted: in particular, there were 113,419 full electric cars registered , +70% compared to 2022 and equal to 16% of the total, and 152,561 plug-in hybrids, +10% compared to the previous year and equal to 21.5%. The response that has arrived is also positive from Europe: in the Old Continent, Volvo's overall sales in 2023 amounted to 294,794 units, up 19% compared to 2022. Of all these, the 100% electric and plug-in hybrids represented 59% of total sales.
The Italian market
It deserves a separate discussion Italian market, protagonist of important growth for Volvo. Specifically: registrations increased from 16,054 in 2022 to 19,017 in 2023, effectively +18.5%, with the best-selling models being the XC40 with over 9,000 units and the XC60 with over 6,000 units. In our country, the cumulative weight of BEVs and PHEVs it was more than 32% on deliveries of the entire range. Looking ahead to the current year, the Swedish brand aims to complete 22,600 deliveries, and to ensure that the share of BEVs and PHEVs together can rise to 42%.
Beyond the debate
“We are experiencing a good moment both in terms of sales and profitability, and over time the weight of our electrified cars is increasing more and more on a global but above all European level – added Lonardi – From this point of view Italy did its part: this year we expect to further increase sales and the contribution to them from our electrified models.” As regards the new EX30 he concludes: “We are convinced that it will largely contribute to defining the sales mix in favor of electric cars and helping us achieve the sustainability objectives we have set for ourselves. Electric in Italy it is even more a source of debate than growth“.
