THE layoffs have sadly been the norm in the video game market for a couple of years now and the most recent news in this regard is the one related to Bungie. The creators of Destiny have laid off 220 people and moved several others to SIE.
Whose fault is it in all of this? More than Sony Interactive Entertainment or more than Bungie?
Opinions from former Bungie employees
Speaking to noted journalist Stephen Totilo, several former Bungie staff members, who obviously wished to remain anonymous, opened up about Bungie’s situation. Four former Bungie staff members said they had no particular ill will toward Sony for the job cuts, and that the blame falls primarily on the studio’s management for promising unrealistic growth.
A former Bungie employee who claims to have multiple sources inside the studio claims that if Sony had not purchased Bungie the consequence would have been total insolvency of the firmwith possible bankruptcy.
Former members of the studio They point the finger at Bungie management that it sold Sony unrealistic financial prospects. One insider even believes that Sony overpaid for Bungie, adding, “I think Bungie sold things that they couldn’t make.”
According to two former members of the studio, Bungie has repeatedly missed financial targets promised to Sony, and on top of that, the studio has apparently been loss-making since the release of Destiny 2’s Lightfall expansion in February 2023.
Furthermore, former staff members also claim that the game’s latest expansion, The final form, did not sell well as Lightfall, but even if that had been the case it wouldn’t have prevented the layoffs.
It also seems that Bungie is falling into the hands of Hermen Hulst and Sony, losing its independence, according to a rumor.
