First season
While the new Spider-Man movie sweeps the box office, the latest Disney + series with the Marvel seal concludes an entertaining first season
Until the hit theaters of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, a necessary box office boost that has given the majors too much power, the new phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was not meeting the expectations of fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. genre of superheroes with certain criteria. On the other hand, the series released in parallel on the official Disney + platform have surprised for good the fan free of prejudices, with their own thinking, away from currents fed by influencers who invent rumors and theories as in ‘Save me’ to hook an audience that he does not easily accept being changed by the rules of the game and rejects any sign of real authorship. ‘Scarlet Witch and Vision’ and ‘Loki’ offered entertainment and originality in front of ‘Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings’ or the solo film of Black Widow, more than usual without intention of exploring new narrative avenues. If ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ was continuous, in pursuit of a trite spectacle, ‘Hawkeye’ has opted for a grateful action comedy tone that relates it to the live versions of Ant-Man – in the first places in the ranking of marvelitas adaptations–. Closer to a ‘buddy movie’ than to the intention of undeservingly transcending the tedious ‘Eternals’, the first season of the latest Marvel series takes place at Christmas, so devouring it around this time seems like the ideal moment.
The initial session of ‘Hawkeye’ only consists of six episodes that are seen with extreme ease, one of the secrets of its success. Disney + opened fire with a batch of two installments and released the rest by chapter per week, a way to hook the public, as in the past, which is gaining strength on online platforms. Hawkeye is not exactly one of the most acclaimed Marvel characters, the beginning of the story makes it clear. Together with his family he is on a trip celebrating Christmas, watching a play starring, precisely, a group of actors disguised as The Avengers. His role does not stand out from the others on the stage, which is the object of ridicule by his children. However, every hero has a fatal fan and Clint Barton, the man behind the most precise and unpredictable bow and arrows on the planet, will not be less. His vacation is cut short when he is involved in an entanglement that leads him to come across a young archer who turns out to be his biggest admirer since he was a child. This is Kate Bishop, a bold girl who dreams of being the best at her thing, but forms can. Between the two, an unexpected alliance arises against a common enemy, a criminal organization commanded by a surprise threat.
Pure chemistry
Jeremy Renner plays a Hawkeye facing his dark side, Ronin, an alter ego unleashed from the past that he has not finished burying. His sword killed numerous gangsters violently, but his anger was more about revenge than the idea of justice. Hailee Steinfeld – don’t miss her in the series ‘Dickinson’ – plays Kate Bishop, the accidental fatigue partner of the superhero saddened by the death of Black Widow in ‘Avengers: Endgame’. The chemistry between the two characters, the spirit of the ‘buddy movie’ and the sense of humor that permeates their dialogues and the situations they face, as dangerous as they are comical in some cases, elevate an audiovisual pastime, as light as it is well orchestrated. which has the incentive of introducing new characters and rescuing some lost to the delight of the scholarly viewer – let’s not do ‘spoilers’ -.
The action scenes are not numerous, but they are forceful. The last episode is a true festival of smacks and funny visual effects on behalf of the famous arrows-trap of the vigilante who wears purple tones – there is no lack of a joke about his clothing. The Christmas season works as a setting and the result fits perfectly in the UCM, without fanfare. Simplicity and hubbub, good characters and generous conflicts. The series ‘Hawkeye’ does not invent anything but plays its cards well and exploits a sense of fun that is not always taken advantage of in Marvel adaptations, from the comic to the multiscreen.
The first season of ‘Hawkeye’ is available on Disney +.
