Trento – The Carabinieri of the cultural heritage protection unit of Udine have returned it to its rightful owner a painting by the Trentino painter Eugenio Prati, entitled “Study and work”created between 1895 and 1986. The painting – informs the Carabinieri – had been stolen together with other works within thehome of a company manager in Rapalloin 1988. The manager had provided the description and photographs of the paintings that had been stolen from him, which were inserted into the database of illicitly stolen goods.
In April 2022, the soldiers of the Data Processing section of the Operations Department of the TPC command in Rome found the presence of Eugenio Prati's canvas inside an exhibition on Trentino artists, “Pearls of art”, which was held at the Giacomo Vittore artists' house in Tenno.
The Carabinieri of the TPC unit of Udine proceeded with the seizure of the owner, a professional gallery owner. According to investigations conducted by the police, the work had been purchased by a gallery owner in Milan, who had in turn bought it from another art dealer. However, the initial responsibilities for the theft have not been ascertained.
The Public Prosecutor's Office of Rovereto then managed to formulate the request for dismissal to the investigating judge who, following the closure of the investigations, returned the painting to its rightful owner.
