Bettina Muchet, the European Union ambassador to Nicaragua, left the country a day after she was informed of the decision of the Daniel Ortega government to expel her, according to diplomatic sources.
Moshet had assumed her position in Managua in September 2021. She left the country by air on a flight to Mexico on her way to the French capital, Paris, according to the sources, who indicated that the police escorted her from her home to the airport.
In addition to the expulsion of the ambassador of the European Union, Nicaragua cut diplomatic relations with the Netherlands, accusing it of meddling in its affairs, and prevented the entry of the new American ambassador because of what it considered “interferences” as well.
In a letter, the Dutch foreign ministry said Nicaragua’s decision was “unfortunate” and “disproportionate”.
The Netherlands said it had decided to permanently stop funding the construction of a hospital in Nicaragua, which had been frozen since 2018.
“The Netherlands is discussing with its European partners how we will respond to this Nicaraguan decision,” The Hague said.
