No one can deny, the world has changed! Humanity entered the twenty-first century of the Christian Era following the consolidation of a capitalist phenomenon known as globalization which, in addition to walking hand in hand with democracy, has economic development as its essence with its expected consequences: expansion of world GDP and growth tax collection by governments, the financial results of companies and the purchasing power of society. With this revenue, the internal markets would move the economy in such a way that governments and companies would have enough resources to invest, even more, in socio-environmental policies and actions, many of them with the support of the third sector, in favor of the less privileged layers of the population and of the necessary sustainable development.
But, unfortunately, the first years of this new century have indicated that, in practice, things seem to be going the opposite way to the theory. Despite all the generation of global wealth, what we see is an increase in intolerance and wars; the failure of available resources on the planet and the intensification of natural disasters; from hunger, thirst and diseases that spread harmfully to the four corners of the Earth; and facing a generalized economic crisis due to financial speculation and the liberality of the markets, with the refinements of unjustifiable greed.
What’s more, new technologies have made the world borderless, but with a worrying outcome: people (and companies too) have much less privacy due to excessive exposure, resulting in times of great reputational impact.
Globalization has also become responsible for a corporate model that is a pernicious pyramid: at the top are profit-hungry shareholders and investors. Next is the board, which demands very short-term results from its executives in order to satisfy the desires of the true owners of the company. In turn, it is the pyramidal base that receives and supports this pressure. And, in many cases, conducting business based on ethics ends up being left out by those who carry the company on their backs.
An antidote to this harmful system is to rescue the “essence” of organizations! In this sense, the first point I highlight is that companies do not have a name. They have a “social reason”, that is, a “reason to exist” that is based on corporate principles and values which are reflected in the mission that, invariably, is always much more dignified and virtuous than simply profit.
The second point is that there is no problem for the company to make money. This is no sin! On the contrary, without economic and financial development, the doors of the organization close and the jobs disappear.
However, companies don’t just appear for their owners to line their pockets. The corporate purpose has to be much nobler than becoming a profit machine. The same thing happens to us. We are not just born to conquer everything in life! Our purpose has to be much bigger than that!
For this, the only solution capable of changing the current reality is to incorporate ethics into the corporate DNA. And since the only acceptable way for companies to act is ethically, this responsibility is in our hands. So don’t surrender to dishonesty. Do not indulge in misconduct. Become a slave to ethics. With integrity we conquer an unassailable character and walk a path of success. When many choose the wrong, ethics whispers: do the right thing!
