The Estonian government’s state security committee has proposed to temporarily strengthen part of the border with Russia with the help of a wire fence. About it informs press service of the Estonian Cabinet of Ministers.
A corresponding proposal was made in connection with the migration crisis on the border of Belarus with Lithuania and Poland.
According to Estonian Prime Minister Kai Kallas, at the moment nothing threatens the country’s border, but the authorities need to be prepared to prevent potential threats. “Estonia is consistently strengthening its external border and the installation of a new fence is part of the plan,” she said.
Estonian Interior Minister Kristian Jaani also added that the installation of barriers only accelerates the planned arrangement of the border with Russia. He said that temporary barriers will be provided to those places where the largest number of illegal border crossing attempts were previously observed.
On November 8, several thousand migrants from the Middle East gathered near the border of Poland and Belarus and attempted to break into the territory of the European Union (EU). Hundreds of refugees were also seen at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border. Minsk was accused of aggravating the migration crisis in the West and they began to discuss the introduction of new sanctions.
Estonia began work on strengthening the border with Russia in July 2020. The authorities of the republic intend to complete the arrangement of the border zone by 2027. The cost of all works is estimated at 130.5 million euros (about 10.8 billion rubles).
