One of the main suspects in the disappearance confessed on Wednesday to having helped to hide bodies.
Several environmental entities have demonstrated and are demanding the president’s government Jair Bolsonaro (PL) after one of the main suspects in the disappearance of journalist Dom Phillips and indigenist Bruno Pereira, Amarildo da Costa Oliveira, confessed to the PF (Federal Police) the death of the 2.
Amarildo declared that he had helped to hide the bodies of the journalist and the indigenist after they had been murdered. Univaja (União dos Povos Indígenas do Vale do Javari), the institution responsible for notifying the disappearance of Bruno and Dom, stated that the death of the two is a “priceless loss”.
The organization highlights that it was responsible for finding the area that later became the target of investigations by the Federal Police, Army, Navy and Fire Department.
According to Univaja, the murder of the journalist and the indigenist constitutes a “political crime”since both were human rights defenders and died performing activities on behalf of indigenous peoples.
The indigenous movement recalled that it sent several letters about a gang of professional fishermen and hunters, linked to drug traffickers, the Federal Public Ministry, the Federal Police and Funai (National Indian Foundation), but that the measures were not taken with the “due speed” and that, as a result, Phillips and Pereira were killed.

The WWF organization also spoke about the case. In a note, the institution directly criticized the speech of the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), promoting the sovereignty of the Amazon, but that, in reality, the forest is marked by several criminal organizations related to drug trafficking, mining, land grabbing, illegal hunting and fishing.
“While in official speeches ‘the Amazon is ours’ and ‘we do not give up our sovereignty’, in practice what we see are brutal murders without clarification or punishment.”
According to WWF, the Brazilian government abandoned the Amazon for a “a senseless project to destroy the forest and exterminate its people”.
The statement states that there was reluctance on the part of the State to start the search for Dom and Bruno, calling the delay “Government neglect” with the Amazon and the defenders of indigenous peoples. Coiab (Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon) mourned the death of the indigenist and the journalist.
In a statement, the entity reinforced the presence of illegal activities in indigenous territories and asked that investigations into the crime be expanded and that an inspection be carried out. “effective” in the Javari Valley.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
The executive director of Amnesty International Brazil, Jurema Werneck, also spoke about the death of Bruno and Dom.
At the official site amnesty, Werneck stated that Brazil is one of the countries that “More kills environmentalists and human rights defenders”. According to the director, this is a consequence of a policy that promotes attacks on environmental legislation and dismantles institutions that protect indigenous rights.
Werneck also said that the Bolsonaro government cannot “close your eyes to the crimes that happen in the Amazon” and that it is the duty of the Brazilian State to protect those who protect the rights of indigenous peoples.
CLIMATE OBSERVATORY
The coalition of Brazilian civil society organizations Climate Observatory published in its official site a note of sorrow mourning the death of the indigenist and the journalist.
According to the note, crime has accomplices in the Bolsonaro administration: the Planalto Palace and the Armed Forces. The observatory says the government reacted to the disappearance with “the same cruelty” with which it treated deaths during the pandemic.
The organization pointed out that the Army postponed “as much as you could” the beginning of the search and that the current president of Funai, Marcelo Xavier, “washed hands”.
The observatory also said that Bolsonaro blamed the victims. “Necropolitics, a hallmark of the current government, is also present in the deaths of Dom and Bruno”said.
