“Elvis”, the new film by Baz Luhrmann, arrives in movie theaters in Peru this July 14. With notable performances by Austin Butler as the ‘King of Rock and Roll’ and Tom Hanks like Tom Parker, this biopic departs a bit from the typical story of a star and makes us reflect to the rhythm of the music on an interesting question seen from a controversial point of view: who killed elvis presley?
In this spoiler free review We tell you what we thought of the new Luhrmann, who —after tapes like “Australia” and “The Great Gatsby”— once again has a solid success.

Parker vs. Presley
We tell you without much entanglement. Austin Butler and Tom Hanks they do a very well developed job as Elvis Presley and Colonel Tom Parker. As the trailer and the official synopsis show, this is a film that explores the controversial and toxic relationship that existed between the two, and that is precisely the heart of the film.
Although this is a biopic, it actually feels more like a long, well-thought-out song, which —when it reaches its end— leaves you with a reflection that doesn’t fall into the cliché of pretending to change your life, but rather on a satisfying note. that makes you want to know more about what you just saw.

The first few minutes of the film start off being perhaps a bit chaotic, but they are part of Baz Luhrmann’s ingenuity to take us on this journey. And boy did he do it! The beginning of the film is an ecstasy that hooks us and then makes us witness a hard story linked to various cultural problems.
“Who Killed Elvis Presley?”, perhaps this may sound a bit confusing, since the ‘King of rock and roll’ died of a heart attack. But the film tries to go a little further, not to look for a culprit, but to offer us an eminent reflection on what it truly is to be a star of his caliber.

Austin Butler deserves an Oscar
About Austin Butler we have several things to say, but —so as not to ruin the movie for you— we can tell you that the 30-year-old actor does a sublime job playing Elvis Presley.
The best thing about his performance is not the excellent songs he manages to play and sing (his voice sounds in the film) nor his most dramatic scenes throughout the film, what sets him apart from various imitators is his magnificent honesty in bringing to life singer.

At no point does it feel like an exaggeration or a forced attempt to look like the Memphis icon. As Butler himself pointed out in an interview with the Los Angeles Times: “But then I realized that we didn’t want a cartoon of him, that we did not want the version of the Wax Museum, but to meet its soul”.
In networks you can already see some comments about his role and there are those who say that deserves an Oscar nomination. From here we agree with this idea. I dare to say that even his performance is much more sincere than Rami Malek’s as Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody”but —so as not to detract from it— it is important to point out that this is a tape with a different tone.

The feeling that this production left me was quite pleasing, especially for the tremendous and poetic ending that has. Without a doubt, something that both true fans and those not very knowledgeable about Elvis Presley will enjoy.
“Elvis” arrives in Peruvian movie theaters this Thursday, July 14.
