There Mercedes G-Class becomes electric with the model G 580rather than adopting the nomenclature EQG which had been hypothesized in the past. While maintaining the structure a load-bearing frame and the reduction system Low Range for off-roading, it features independent front suspension and a rigid rear axle. The lithium ion battery from 116 kWhintegrated into the frame, has an autonomy of up to 473 km according to WLTP, protected by a torsion-resistant casing and a carbon underbody protector. THE four enginesintegrated into the frame, deliver a maximum power of 432 kW (587 hp) and a maximum torque of 1,164 Nmmanaged by virtual differential blocks via torque vectoring.
Electric Mercedes G-Class
The new electric Mercedes G-Class is equipped with four individually controlled motors positioned close to the wheels. It is the first vehicle from the Mercedes-Benz Group with individual traction as standard, thanks to the motors integrated into the ladder frame.
The 4×4 powertrain develops a total maximum power of 587 hp (432 kW) and a maximum torque of 1,164 Nmwhich allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds and to reach a maximum speed electronically limited to 180 km/h. The great power allows it to advance on difficult terrain and steep slopes.
Using the torque vectoring to generate virtual differential locks, the electric G-Class ensures precise distribution of torque on each wheel, ensuring optimal traction on any terrain. This system allows for agile and safe driving without the need to manually activate the differential locksimproving ease of use and safety in demanding conditions.
Battery and autonomy
The new electric Mercedes G-Class is equipped with a lithium ion battery two-layer with 216 cells distributed in twelve modules, integrated into the ladder frame made of steel up to four millimeters thick to ensure a low center of gravity and greater rigidity. The battery, with a usable capacity of 116 kWhoffers autonomy up to 473 kilometers according to WLTP regulations.
The safety of the battery is guaranteed by a high voltage system that includes eight protection elementswhile the underbody protection is made from a mix of materials, including carbon, to ensure strength and resistance.
While driving the assistant ECHO analyzes navigation data to optimize driving efficiency while navigating with electric intelligence consider numerous factors to plan the most convenient route and include optimized charging stops. Finally, the active autonomy monitoring function provides recommendations for maintaining aoptimal efficiency during the trip.
How to recharge
The electric Mercedes G-Class is equipped with charging systems AC and DCwith a maximum capacity of 11 kW in AC and up to 200 kW in DCallowing you to recharge from 10% to 80% in approximately 32 minutes. The electric G-Class offers three customizable charging programs: “Standard”, “Work” And “Home”, which allow users to set parameters such as departure time, climate control and maximum charge level. The “Home” and “Work” programs can be activated automatically based on the location of the vehicle, once parked in a memorized charging pointwith notifications provided by MBUX.
The energy recovery system of the electric G-Class converts the vehicle's kinetic energy into electrical energy during reversing and braking, charging the high-voltage battery. The level of recovery can be set to manually or automatically, with options ranging from maximum recovery to free movement of the vehicle.
During the slow marchrecovery is activated when the driver releases the accelerator pedal in mode “D” or “R”. This system offers various recovery settings, such as “DAuto” which automatically adjusts the intensity based on traffic, “D+” without recovery e “D-“, “D-“ with normal or maximum recovery during coasting.
Chassis and suspension characteristics
The new electric G-Class, as stated by Mercedes, even surpasses traditional engine models in some aspects, such as the wading depth. The chassis has been strengthened and modified to adapt to the electric model, maintaining the front suspension independent and therigid rear axle. The drive shafts a double joint guarantee a constant camber during compression and uniform transmission of propulsion.
The electric G-Class can overcome slopes of up to 100% and a maximum wading depth of 850 mmAlmost 15cm more compared to the G 550 and G 63. The adjustable adaptive shock absorbers ensure a stable ride on rough terrain, compensating for uneven terrain and reducing body movement.
Specifically, the electric off-road vehicle is capable of tackling side slopes of up to 35 degrees and offers a generous ground clearance of almost 25cm between the boards. With an approach angle of 32 degreesa starting angle of 30.7 degrees and a tipping angle of 20.3 degreeseasily overcomes rough terrain.
Off-road capabilities vary from low-rpm modes, with a two-speed gearboxto functions like the “G-Turn” which allows the vehicle to rotate on the spot. Torque vectoring technology allows virtual differential lock, while adjustable adaptive shock absorbers ensure a stable ride on difficult terrain. The function “G-Steering” reduces the turning radius, making it easier to get out of complex situations.
Low Range driving mode
The driving system of the electric G-Class offers different modes to adapt to different conditions. Among these are the modalities “Comfort”, “Sport” And “Individual” for on-road driving, while for off-road there are modes “Between” And “Rock” selectable via the switch Electric Dynamic Select.
The mode “Comfort” is the default, optimized for efficient energy consumption by primarily channeling propulsion onto a single axis. The mode “Rock” activates gear reduction Low Rangeguaranteeing maximum driving torque to tackle difficult terrain.
This setting increases the handling and response of the vehicle on unpaved terrain and the maximum speed is limited to 85 km/h. The intelligent off-road driving function activates automatically to ensure optimal performance on difficult terrain.
Electric Mercedes G-Class what changes outside
The electric Mercedes G-Class keeps it square style and robust than the petrol or diesel model. It can be purchased without the spare wheel rear, replaced by one charging cable boxsnow chains and tools.
To differentiate it from the thermal version at the front there is a closed grill with a illuminated outline and subtle aerodynamic changes have been made, such as a slightly raised hood, air curtains for the rear wheel arches, different cladding on the A-pillars and one roof spoiler. You can opt for a black panel for the grill with an extra cost.
Cockpit, the interior of the electric G-Class
The interior of the electric G-Class is inspired by the traditional G-Class, with screens from 12.3 inches and the grab handle on the passenger side of the dashboard. A unique function is the “transparent hood”using a 360 degree camera which allows the driver to see through the hood, similar to other features found on recent models such as EQE And EQS.
The launch version, Edition One, offers four special Manufaktur colors and the classic Obsidian Black Metallic. All variants include calipers blue brakes and an insert for trim strips. Furthermore, the back box is included as standard, along with theAMG Line et al Night Package with 20-inch wheels and dark details on the bodywork.
Inside, there are blue carbon fiber trim and the “G-Roar”a simulated sound of V8 engine combustion during acceleration, which recalls the sound experience of the traditional G-Class.
Price, how much does the electric G-Class cost
In Germany the price of the electric G-Class 580 is 142,622 euroswhich rises to 192,524 euros for Edition One.
→ Class G 580 EQ: €142,622
→ Classe G 580 EQ Edition One: €192,524
