Next Sunday, October 2, the first round of the 2022 elections will be held. In the week before the election, several deadlines related to electoral propaganda, debates with candidates and the inspection of the polls expire.
This Monday, the 26th, is the last day to register electoral polls that will be released until the day of voting in the first round. The electoral law allows polls to be released at any time, including on election day, but they must be registered five days in advance.
Starting next Tuesday, the 27th, no voter can be arrested, except in flagrante delicto. The rule is valid for up to 48 hours after the election.
It is also the last day for the entities inspecting the electoral process, such as the Armed Forces, the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) and the Federal Court of Auditors (TCU), formalized a request to verify the integrity of the systems that transmit the votes from the electronic voting machines to the computers that tally the votes. Verification can be done from Friday 30th until Sunday 2nd at 5pm.
On Thursday, the 29th, the last advertisements will be aired during the free election time on radio and television related to the first round. It is also the last day for rallies, which can go on until midnight. Debates on radio and TV can be held until 7 am on Friday, the 30th.
Friday is also the last day for posting candidate announcements in the written press. Up to 10 per vehicle are allowed.
In the 48 hours before voting, starting at 8 am on Friday, it will be prohibited to carry weapons within 100 meters of polling stations. The rule is valid until 5 pm on Monday, 3.
Election advertising over loudspeakers will be allowed until Saturday, October 1 at 10 pm. On the same day and time, the deadline for distributing saints and holding marches of any kind expires.
Between 9 am and 12 pm on Saturday, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) publishes the polling stations that will be submitted to audits of electronic voting machines. On the same day, those interested in using their own program to check the ballot boxes in the designated sections must send a copy of the program to the TSE. This verification is carried out from the comparison with the systems sealed and digitally signed by the inspection entities on September 2nd.
On Sunday, October 2, from 8 am to 5 pm, voting takes place. Before the start, at 7 am, the poll workers from each polling station print the zerésima – zero ballot box, which shows that the equipment has no votes. From 8 am, the system is ready to receive votes. The issuance of ballot boxes at the end of voting begins at 5:00 pm.
In parallel with the voting, the pilot project with biometrics of the Integrity Test of electronic voting machines will be carried out. The objective is to verify that the vote deposited is the same as that counted by the ballot box. This year, part of the procedure (in 56 of the 641 polls submitted to the test) will be carried out in locations close to the polling stations. Voters will be invited to participate to activate the ballot box tested with their biometrics.
During this period, electoral officers and activists are prohibited from asking for votes – the practice of exiting the polls is an electoral crime punishable by imprisonment of up to one year and a fine of up to R$15,000. Agglomerations in favor of candidates are also prohibited by law. The silent manifestation of voters, however, is allowed.
