M.Imagine a game in which the weaker team breaks all the bones of the opponent before the whistle, while the referee looks the other way. Something like that behaved in Nicaragua as the elections approached: Anyone who stood in the way of President Daniel Ortega, the judiciary who belonged to him classified him as a threat to sovereignty and imprisoned him. Seven possible presidential candidates, more than thirty activists, business people, journalists and even political analysts were arrested and the main opposition alliance banned. Each of the arrested opponents would have beaten Ortega. But the will of the majority was and is being suppressed by force. Ortega doesn’t even go out of his way to cover it up. In order to stay in power, the only revolutionary leader had no choice but to break definitively with democracy.
On the Monday after winning the “election”, Ortega showed himself to be in a rush of victory – or rather in a rush of power. After a large part of the international community had expressed itself extremely clearly about what was going on in Nicaragua and threatened consequences in the form of sanctions, Ortega made a hate speech for a verbal all-round blow. He called the United States and Spain fascists and imperialists, and he also called Spain “descendants of Franquism”. Ortega presented the remaining members of the EU as “Hitler’s siblings”. But the hardest hit was his opponents in his own country, whom Ortega accused of having planned a coup against him. “Those locked up there are the sons of bitches of the Yankee imperialists,” Ortega said. “They are not Nicaraguans, they have no country.”
