eldiario.es presents its principles on artificial intelligence: “journalism, a human capacity”

eldiario.es ends up shaping his declaration of principles on artificial intelligence, a short text that aims to provide the writing of an ethical position before the new digital revolution and basic standards of use. This is the first guide published by a medium in Spain, following the example of newspapers such as The Guardian, the New York Times or Le Monde, and has been debated and approved from the Governing Committee of the newspaper.

The central idea of this declaration of principles of Eldiario.es about artificial intelligence is that “journalism is an exclusively human capacity.” The document establishes that the value of the journalistic office is not the mere generation of digital content, but a long list of tasks that are far from the scope of AI and that require qualities only within reach of humans in contact with other humans: inquire about what has not been published, question the official or majority versions, read between the lines what a source explains. Dude. Empathize

From that perspective, therefore, eldiario.es will not replace his journalism for artificial intelligence and not published added value formats such as reports, chronicles or journalistic podcasts generated entirely by AI. The guide does allow the use of artificial intelligence tools as a technical complement for the correction, edition or processing of texts and data. And authorizes its punctual use in experimental texts as long as the use of AI is “clearly identified in a visible place” and cannot cause “mistakes or confusion in the reader.” In that sense, it is expressly prohibited “the use of images or voices to create situations that have not occurred in reality.”

The guide also establishes a series of transparency and internal control mechanisms to ensure that “no artificial intelligence will make journalistic decisions at eldiario.es” and that any use of AI is “aware of its possible biases or risks of reliability.”

The document concludes with a section that establishes that “eldiario.es will defend a regulation of artificial intelligence respectful of human rights and always subject to democracy and public interest.”
