A thousand people attend the naming ceremony of the pier as Terminal Juan Sebastián Elcano, in which the rain was seen only at the end of the ceremony
Around a thousand people attended the nomination ceremony for the cruise dock as the Juan Sebastián Elcano Terminal on Tuesday afternoon. In the ceremony, which was also attended by the first civil and military authorities, a mixed company from the Navy, the Marine Infantry Band and students from the Naval School participated.
During the event, José Castillo from Union made a historical review of the first circumnavigation of the world (1519-1522), led by Fernando de Magallanes and Juan Sebastián Elcano.
The Admiral of Acción Marítima, Vice Admiral Juan Luis Sobrino Pérez-Crespo, spoke at the event, as did the Mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, who thanked the ship’s captain, Manuel García Ruiz, in command of the Juan Sebastián Elcano, for the stopover . She also recalled that “from today, our visitors arriving by sea will enter the city through the dock that honors the memory of one of the most important Spaniards in world history. Juan Sebastián Elcano will be the first and last name they have contact with during their visit to Cartagena.
After that, the plaque that gives the name to the cruise terminal was discovered, which will later be permanently in the building of the new terminal that the Port Authority will build in the coming months.
With the parade of the participating troops, the act ended, although it was not until the departure of the training ship on its new voyage around the world, when the guests began to leave the area. It was then that the rain tightened although it respected the march.
In the terminal you can also see part of the monument made by the Cartagena sculptor Fernando Sáenz de Elorrieta, in homage to the illustrious Basque sailor from Getaria, Juan Sebastián Elcano. It is the first part of the two that it consists of. It is a globe of the world in which the route followed by the Spanish expeditionary along with Ferdinand Magellan will be reflected. It will measure three meters in diameter and will be made of iron, corten steel and stainless steel. In September, a statue of Elcano at the helm will be added to the top.
