Lorca is celebrating three years of “railway isolation” after the closure of the train line for the construction of the AVE platform. This was recalled this Tuesday by the mayor, Fulgencio Gil, who demanded that the Ministry of Transportation speed up the works on all sections so that the city recovers the rail connection. According to Gil, “the forecasts are that there are another three more years until we can see the commuter train in the municipality” despite the fact that “they promised that it would only be a two-year cutoff.”
The mayor said that the forecasts of prioritizing the section from Murcia to San Diego to rehabilitate that line are not being met either since “today and paradoxically,” the construction of the underground in the urban fabric of Lorca is more advanced than other sections. previous. This makes no sense, Gil assured, because no matter how fast the underground section of Lorca goes, if the previous ones are not completed, “not a single train will arrive” to the city.
He assured that he will continue to demand from Adif and the Ministry that the completion of the Totana section be accelerated as much as possible to enable the San Diego station and reestablish, in addition to the commuter service, the High Speed service with Madrid and Barcelona.
He regretted that Lorca people have been having to resort to the bus service for three years, which is “clearly slow and deficient” or travel in their own vehicle on the A-7 highway “totally collapsed” near Lorca, Alhama de Murcia and Alcantarilla. The Águilas-Lorca-Murcia commuter train line was used by 1.2 million travelers per year, who since October 2021 have been forced to travel by road.
