First modification:
The current international situation has led Germany to make a modification of its Constitution; the change was approved by the Bundestag, the German parliament. This managed to facilitate an extraordinary item of 100,000 million euros for military spending through the creation of a fund. The sum will be invested over five years and seeks to strengthen Germany’s armed forces. All this due to the deterioration of security in Europe after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Germany would allocate 2% of its GDP annually for the Defense area. In five years the country will become the military power of Europe and will be, according to some experts quoted by the Financial Times, the guardian of Eastern Europe. Russia, for its part, criticized the creation of the military fund and considered it a “remilitarization”, a word that refers to the Nazi period and was used by the spokeswoman for Russian diplomacy, Maria Zajárova.
Are we facing a new line of tension between Berlin and Moscow? How does this redistribute the loads in Europe? What role will Germany assume in the EU and within NATO? Faced with the end of German pacifism and the neutrality of Sweden, Finland and Switzerland, are we facing a new configuration of the continent? We analyze it in this edition of El Debate together with our guests:
– Ana del Paso, analyst and professor at the Complutense University of Madrid.
– Jesús Manuel Triana, security and defense analyst.
