An A330 tank plane of the Ministry of Defense made a precautionary landing at Eindhoven Airport around 3.15 pm on Monday afternoon. The airport said that holidaymakers may be delayed as a result, because the runway was temporarily unavailable. Air traffic resumed around 4 p.m
Several emergency services rushed out and were on standby around 3 p.m. The fire brigade, among others, is present with several vehicles.
The tanker first flew past the airport for inspection so that outside experts could get a good look at what exactly was going on and whether a landing was necessary. The tank hose appeared to hang out about 15 meters on the left wing.
System does not collapse
A spokesperson for Eindhoven Air Base explains: “The aircraft have two different systems with which refueling can be done in the air. The tank hose is under the wing and that system no longer collapses. That is why the plane has to make a precautionary landing.”
However, that was not immediately possible. At around 3:10 p.m., the spokesman said they were waiting for a suitable time. “We assume that the plane can land safely, but everyone’s safety is paramount. Especially because we share the airport with the civilian Eindhoven Airport.”
The spokesman says that it is a tanker aircraft of the Multinational MRTT Unit, an international unit. The refueling devices are mainly used to refuel other aircraft in the air, but also for the transport of people, cargo and for medical evacuations.
Bird in the aircraft engines
This morning it was also a problem at the airport when there was a bird flew into the aircraft engines of the aircraft of the PSV squad. As a result, the plane had to stay on the ground. After an hour it was solved and Ruud van Nistelrooij’s team could still start the journey.
The players had to get up early on Monday morning, but that didn’t save time. An airport spokesperson confirms that the uninvited animal caused problems.
